In his youth career he played from 1993 until 1998 for SV Gelchenkirchen-Hessler 06. In the period of 1998-1999 he played in the FC Schalke 04 youth, but returned from 1999 until 2004 to SV Gelchenkirchen-Hessler 06. In 2004 he moved to SSV Buer, and in 2005 he played for the VfL Bochum youth.
In 2008 he made his senior career debut for VfL Bochum II. He had 2 appearances and scored 1 goal before moving to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2009. He played 48 matches there and scored 6 goals. Since 2011 İlkay plays for Borussia Dortmund. He has currently played 62 matches where he scored 7 goals.
İlkay also plays for the Germany senior squad, but he was also approached by the Turkish national football team. İlkay stated choosing between Germany and Turkey was the most difficult decision in his life. İlkay went through Germany U18, Germany U19, Germany U20 and Germany U21 (23 matches, 1 goal) before making his debut for the senior Germany squad. His first international match was against Belgium, which Germany won with 3-1. So far İlkay has played 8 matches and scored 1 goal.
